  • The Matsya Paripushti nutrition initiative in Assam, leveraging innovative fish-based food technology from Kochi, has been awarded the prestigious Karmashree Award by the state government, highlighting its success in enhancing nutritional outcomes

In a significant boost to nutritional efforts across the state, the Assam government has bestowed its esteemed Karmashree Award upon the Matsya Paripushti nutrition programme. This recognition specifically highlights the pioneering technology developed by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in Kochi, which underpins the programme's success in delivering nutritious fish-based food products to vulnerable populations.

The Matsya Paripushti initiative, a crucial government-supported nutrition scheme, operates through a network of anganwadis and schools across Assam. Its primary objective is to combat malnutrition among women and children by integrating specially formulated fish-based food products into their diets. The adoption of CIFT's innovative technology has been instrumental in creating these highly nutritious and accessible dietary supplements.

The genesis of this award-winning technology dates back to a collaborative research programme initiated in 2019. This partnership involved CIFT and an international non-profit research organization dedicated to transforming aquatic food systems to alleviate hunger and malnutrition in developing nations. As part of this collaboration, CIFT was tasked with developing easy-to-prepare, affordable, and nutritionally rich fish-based food products. The institute's research team successfully formulated a nutrient-dense fish powder derived from small indigenous fish species, designed for seamless incorporation into various daily food preparations.

The acknowledgment from the Assam government through the Karmashree Award underscores the profound impact of scientific innovation in public health. This achievement not only validates CIFT's research prowess but also sets a precedent for effective, community-level nutrition interventions, potentially paving the way for similar programmes in other regions grappling with malnutrition challenges.
