Jorhat, Assam – More than a month after devastating floodwaters receded from parts of Assam, a grim reality persists for nine families in Jorhat’s Majiya Bheti village, who continue to live in a roadside relief camp, unable to return to their homes.
The families have been displaced since July 19, when the flood situation in the area severely deteriorated. While many residents in surrounding areas have slowly started rebuilding their lives, these nine families face a prolonged crisis, with their houses, agricultural land, livestock, and all belongings severely damaged or washed away by the deluge.
Local accounts, including that of Rekha Dorobdhora from No. 2 Majiya Bheti village, highlight the families' ongoing struggle to meet basic needs in the temporary shelter. The prolonged stay underscores the severe impact the floods have had on their lives, extending well beyond the immediate emergency phase.
The situation in Majiya Bheti serves as a stark reminder of the long-term challenges faced by communities in Assam, where recovery often stretches for months after the floodwaters subside, demanding sustained attention and support for those most affected.
