Guwahati: In a significant move to alleviate the financial burden on residents impacted by the recent devastating floods, the Assam government has announced plans to approach non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and insurance providers. The objective is to secure expeditious disposal of claims and implement loan moratoriums for customers in the four districts worst hit by the deluge.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the government's intention to ensure that flood victims receive timely assistance. This initiative follows a decision made earlier this week by the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), which approved a six-month moratorium on loan repayments for all flood-affected individuals in these critical districts.
The focus areas for these relief measures include Sivasagar, Chariadeo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, which have borne the brunt of the floods this year. Officials are currently undertaking a comprehensive assessment of damages to houses, livestock, and other properties. The government has pledged to disburse funds for repairs as swiftly as possible once these assessments are finalized.
The ongoing floods have caused widespread devastation across Assam, affecting over two lakh people and claiming at least 80 lives so far. The state administration's multi-pronged approach underscores its commitment to providing immediate financial respite and facilitating recovery for the affected populace, particularly those in the severely impacted regions.
