Guwahati: The Assam government has sought the intervention of the Central Government in banning Popular Front of India, an extremist Islamic organization in India (PFI), said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While addressing the media, CM Sarma said, “In accordance to an investigation we have found that PFI is involved with various illegal activities in the state. Since the state government cannot ban an organization so we have send a report to the Centre with evidence seeking to ban this group.”

CM Sarma asserted that the state government had collected enough evidence against PFI, which showed that it is linked with various unconstitutional activities.

“We are sure the group will be banned immediately by the Central government.” said CM Sarma.

Reportedly, several cases were registered against PFI and some people of the group were also arrested by the Assam Police.

Earlier, the Assam government claimed that PFI instigated violence during the Garukhuti eviction drive in Darrang district in which two people lost their lives and many others received serious injuries including Assam police personnel.
