Digital Desk: The Assam government has decided to regularise the contracts of approximately 40,000 teachers who work in government schools across the state.

"Over 25,000 TET-qualified teachers are working on a contract basis in primary schools across the state." In addition, 9,500 contractual instructors were employed in basic schools," adds state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

Furthermore, 4,500 teachers teach students in grades 9 and 10. "We've decided to schedule regular appointments for all of them," he added.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the state government's plan to regularise the jobs of about 40,000 teachers during his Independence Day speech this year.

"Following the Chief Minister's announcement, the education department has prepared a plan to regularise the jobs of those 40K teachers. We've set a goal of finishing the process by March of next year," Pegu told reporters on Monday.

He also stated that contractual instructors' previous service time will not be calculated.

"Those who will join the regular posts-old will be treated as getting fresh appointments," Pegu added.

Even though the 40,000 teachers were on contract, they were paid on the same basis as permanent teachers.

According to Pegu, the remuneration of those teachers will be reduced after they enter the regular ranks because their previous service period will not be calculated.
