Digital Desk: The Assam government is introducing the "Jolly Phonics" teaching method in 400 schools across Kamrup Metro and Kamrup Rural in an effort to improve students English language skills in the early grades.

The move comes after the National Achievement Survey (NAS) pointed out the difficulties that many students face, particularly in the early grades, when it comes to reading English with accurate pronunciation and writing effectively in English.

The analysis also revealed that some teachers still use traditional teaching methods, highlighting the importance of adopting new and effective approaches to boost language learning.

To deal with these issues, the government decided to implement the modern teaching method of phonics, which focuses on teaching English with accurate pronunciation.

In 2022, the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) conducted a phonics intervention in six schools in the Kamrup (M) district in collaboration with Jolly Learning Limited (JLL) UK, and the results were impressive. With the approval of the Assam government, this effort will now be expanded to 400 schools, with 200 schools in each district catering to lower primary students.

A two-day block-level teacher training program is scheduled from August 7 to August 10 to ensure the proper implementation of Jolly Phonics in schools.

The main objective of the training is to boost pronunciation and reading skills, with a focus on phonics. In addition, the program seeks to improve English writing skills among Grade 1 students.

The non-residential training will be held at the block level, with 200 teachers from each district participating for a total of 400 participants. The training will be divided into two batches, with Batch 1 taking place on August 7 and 8, and Batch 2 taking place on August 9 and 10.

The training will be held in the District Institute of Education and Training, with two halls dedicated to Kamrup Rural. Tarini Choudhary Government Girls Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School and Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School in Kamrup Metro would be the training venues.
