Digital Desk: The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) has taken a significant step towards modernizing its examination process by announcing the introduction of OMR sheets for objective-type questions in the upcoming High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations scheduled to be held in February 2024.
In a directive issued by SEBA to the Inspector of Schools (AII), the board outlined its plan to incorporate objective-type questions into the HSLC exams. These questions will account for 50 percent of the total marks in core subjects, including English (CI), General Mathematics (C2), General Science (C3), and Social Science (C4). Each objective-type question will carry one mark, and students will be provided with a single OMR sheet bearing their name for these questions.
The remaining 50 percent of the examination will continue to consist of conventional questions, with students receiving separate answer scripts containing 16 pages, similar to previous years.

SEBA has also issued specific eligibility criteria for students appearing in the HSLC examination in 2024:
1. The students who appeared in Unit Test- 1 (except those students who were unsuccessful in HSLC Examination, 2023) and are regularly attending in classes and who will appear in subsequent examinations like Unit Test-II, Half Yearly Examination and Pre-Board Examination.
2. The unsuccessful candidates of HSLC examination, 2023 who are re-admitted in class-X but could not appear in Unit Test-1, have to attend classes regularly and also to appear in Half Yearly Examination, Unit Test-II, and Pre-Board Examination.
SEBA has also confirmed that the procedures for handling sealed boxes/cartons containing confidential examination materials will remain unchanged from previous examinations. These boxes will not be opened during transit or within the police station or outpost strong rooms. Instead, they will be opened exclusively in the sorting room of the examination center. The smaller packets of confidential materials, each containing 10 question papers, will be unsealed solely within the examination hall or room.
SEBA has urged the Inspector of Schools to disseminate this information to all students well in advance to ensure a smooth transition to the new examination format in the HSLC examination of 2024. This introduction of OMR sheets marks a significant shift in Assam's educational evaluation system, emphasizing objectivity and efficiency in assessment.
