Guwahati: The Assam government has embarked on a comprehensive, technology-enabled program to assess the extensive damage caused by this year's devastating floods, as water levels gradually return to normal across most affected areas. This strategic move aims to ensure a swift and transparent evaluation, forming a crucial database for subsequent rehabilitation and assistance measures.
The initiative commenced with the inauguration of a digital survey training programme for officials from flood-affected districts in Jorhat on Friday. This marks a pivotal step in equipping ground staff with the necessary skills to conduct accurate assessments using modern tools.
Assam has endured one of its most severe flood seasons in decades this year, resulting in the tragic loss of 98 lives and widespread destruction to homes, vital infrastructure like roads and bridges, and agricultural lands. The scale of the calamity underscores the urgency and importance of a precise damage assessment.
Following the inauguration of the training, the Chief Minister engaged in detailed discussions with officials from the worst-hit districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, alongside senior representatives from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). These deliberations focused on streamlining the modalities for accelerating relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected regions.
Officials confirmed that a district-level training programme for surveyors is scheduled to begin on August 8, with the actual digital damage assessment survey slated to commence across the state from August 9. This phased approach is expected to facilitate a robust and efficient recovery process for the flood-ravaged state.
