Digital Desk: Assam observes Abhiruchi Sports Day on Wednesday to honor the birth anniversary of Bhogeswar Baruah, the first Arjuna Award recipient from the state.
This day highlights Bhogeswar Baruah's contributions to the Indian sports. This year, Oil India Limited has organised a mass jogging event at the Sarusajai Stadium to mark the occasion.
The event will feature notable attendees, including Bhogeswar Baruah himself, Sports Minister Nandita Garlosa, actor Barsha Rani Bishaya, and several prominent sportspersons.
Students from various schools and colleges are also set to actively participate in the celebrations.
Mr. Baruah's birthday is celebrated on September 3 every year across the state.
Bhogeswar Baruah, an Indian former athlete and coach, was one of the first Assamese to win gold at an international event, clinching a gold medal in the 800-metre running event at the 1966 Asian Games.
Baruah, a son of a farmer, was born on September 3, 1940. He grew up at his residence in Sivasagar and joined the Indian Defence Force in 1960.
