Digital Desk: The Election Commission declared the election dates for the 28 assembly constituencies of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. Scheduled for January 8, 2024, the polls will commence at 8 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., according to Assam State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar, who made the announcement during a press conference today.

The counting of votes is slated for January 12, 2024, as per the State Election Commission. Prospective candidates have until December 21, 2023, to file their nominations, with the last date for withdrawal of candidature set for December 22, 2023.

In the previous 2019 elections, the BJP secured victory in 19 out of 28 seats, while the INC claimed two seats in the highly populated constituencies of Haflong and Garampani. The AGP clinched one seat, with the remaining seats won by BJP-backed independent candidates. Notably, after the elections, one AGP elected member and one INC member defected to the saffron party.
