Police officials have assured that anyone found with valid documentation will be released immediately

Digital Desk: In a major statewide massive crackdown, more than 2,000 suspected people living in Assam without legal citizenship paperwork have been detained by Assam Police. As directed by the Central Government, a 30-day directive issued by authorities to act on all unregistered migrants, with particular focus on suspected Bangladeshi nationals.

Authorities described this as an operation is one of the most significant immigration enforcement efforts in the region in years, and it’s part of their overall plan to tighten border security in the northeast. A large number of detainees have been taken to the Rupnagar Police Reserve in Guwahati,  where verification and identification processes are actively underway.

A lot of tension arose at the Rupnagar facility when about 300 people were held overnight after coming from various areas in Guwahati. News of the detentions spread, and relatives of those arrested tried to get there immediately, carrying their identification and citizenship documents. Many people waited in line for hours outside the police station, and some scenes were reported as people began to worry about what would happen with their paperwork.

Anyone who shows proper documentation will be allowed to go free right away, police officials have confirmed. However, the  situation is still narrowed down and uneasy, with verification still ongoing and large crowds gathering around the facilities.

The Assam Police have asked everyone to remain calm and support officials who are involved in the exercise. The drive will go on in the coming days and those who cannot show proof of their paperwork could face legal consequences.

It confirms that the central government is taking stronger action on immigration, given the growing worry about illegal settling and its effects on the population and resources in Assam and across the Northeast.
