A significant controversy has erupted at Habraghat Higher Secondary School in Krishnai, Goalpara district, Assam, leading to police intervention and administrative action. The incident stems from allegations that a group of students brought beef onto the school premises and encouraged classmates to eat it, prompting formal complaints from affected students and their families.
According to reports filed with the police, the incident occurred during the lunch break on June 5. Two Hindu students from Class IX alleged that while they were having their tiffin inside a classroom, five of their Muslim classmates, who were reportedly consuming beef they had brought from home, urged them to partake in the meat. The Hindu students objected to the offer and subsequently brought the matter to the attention of an assistant teacher.
Initial responses to the complaint have also come under scrutiny. The two students claimed that while the teacher reprimanded those involved, they were advised against discussing the incident publicly. Further attempts to inform the principal and other teachers reportedly did not result in immediate or substantial action being taken at the school level.
Later that evening, the two students informed their families about the incident. This revelation quickly escalated into widespread concern among local residents, leading the families to file a formal complaint with the authorities. Police have since initiated an investigation into the allegations, with administrative officials also reportedly looking into the school's handling of the matter.
