Digital Desk: Assam has been ranked third in the country in terms of murder rate in the year 2021.
According to a report released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Assam recorded a total of 1269 murder cases at a rate of 3.4 percent in 2021.
Jharkhand has the highest murder rate (4.1 percent), while Haryana ranks second (3.8 percent).
The murder rate is calculated as per the number of crimes per one lakh population.
The NCRB reports that in 2021, the average annual murder rate across the country was 2.2%.
As per the report, 3558 murder cases were filed in Assam between 2019 and 2021.
Reportedly, the Assam police registered 1192 murder cases in 2021.
The report states that the reason for the highest number of murder cases (536) in the state in 2021 was unknown.
During this time period, 311 murders were committed due to "personal revenge or animosity," 227 due to "disputes," and 105 due to "property or land dispute."
In addition, nine dowry murders were reported in the state last year.
