Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared today that the state is set to pass a pioneering law on February 4, 2024, prohibiting polygamy. This announcement came during his address at Agenda Aajtak, where Chief Minister Sarma covered a range of critical topics.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the country. He assured that these processes would be seamlessly executed under the jurisdiction of the Home Minister, emphasizing their significance for the nation's welfare.
In a notable statement, Sarma expressed his commitment to empowering the Muslim community, referring to them as "big brothers" who must be empowered. He disclosed that the caste census within the Hindu community had been successfully completed and had garnered support from Muslim leaders and the public. Sarma argued that a similar census within the Muslim community would identify backward sections and pave the way for their empowerment.
"We have initiated the caste census within the Muslim community in Assam. This aligns with the principles of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and promotes national empowerment," said Sarma. He urged for the closure of madrassas, encouraging aspirations for professions like doctors and engineers, steering away from traditional roles.
On the political front, Chief Minister Sarma questioned the opposition's ability to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in national elections. He criticized the Congress party for its lack of a formidable opponent and highlighted disconnection within the party.
Regarding OBC representation, Sarma challenged Rahul Gandhi's recent interest in OBC matters, pointing out the Congress party's failure to prioritize OBC candidates for the prime ministerial role during its tenure. He criticized the party for not having an OBC Prime Minister despite having five prime ministers from its ranks.
Chief Minister Sarma advocated for a more inclusive political approach and criticized the Congress party for changing alliances without a clear strategy. He suggested that focusing on positive contributions to the nation could benefit the opposition in the long run. The upcoming law against polygamy is expected to make Assam a pioneer in addressing social issues and promoting gender equality.
