Digital Desk: Assam to get 100 new electric buses. As per reports, 50 buses will be given to Guwahati, and Jorhat and Silchar will receive 25 buses each. The move will help the global campaign to reduce carbon emissions.

The Department of Heavy Industry has sanctioned 5,595 electric buses to 64 cities to give a push to clean mobility in public transportation. The Assam government will receive 100 buses under this scheme.

Transport Minister Parimal Suklabadiya has said the process to procure the electric and CNG buses has begun. "The decision was made following drastic climate change due to high pollution levels. "Vehicular pollution is one of the major concerns. It has posed a serious threat to public health as well as the environment," he added.

The minister also said all the government vehicles in Assam will be converted to electric vehicles by 2030 to curb carbon emissions as per the Electric Vehicle Policy of the state.

Currently, Guwahati has 700 privately owned city buses, all of them run on diesel. 260 of them belong to ASTC. There are only 15 electric city buses in the city since 2019. ASTC is planning to replace all the city buses in Assam with electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) by 2027
