Ashmita Paul has recently written a book titled "Kanaklata Barua: Forgotten Martyr of Assam." The main objective behind her move is to spread awareness of Kanaklata Barua amongst students across the nation.
Who was Kanaklata Barua?
Kanaklata Barua was one of the youngest freedom fighters of the Quit India movement and hailed from Gohpur, Assam. She was born on December 22, 1924. Unfortunately, she died on September 20, 1942. Barua was born in the Borangabari village of the undivided Darrang district of Assam as the daughter of Krishna Kanta and Karneshwari Barua. Her grandfather, Ghana Kanta Barua, was a famous hunter in Darrang. Her ancestors were from the Dolakasharia Barua Kingdom. In 1942, she, along with a group of freedom fighters, who called themselves "Mrityu bahini" (death squad), marched towards Gohpur Police Station to hoist the national flag as a move in support of the Quit India Movement. Despite open firing by the police, Barua marched to perform the brave act and, in the process, was shot and martyred at the age of just 17.
She is also known as Birbala and Shaheed.
