Guwahati: Assam has witnessed a significant surge in direct benefit transfers (DBT), with an estimated Rs 16,640 crore disbursed directly to approximately 1.82 crore beneficiaries across the state over the last four years. This substantial financial infusion underscores the growing effectiveness and reach of digital welfare delivery mechanisms in the region.

These figures were brought to light at a recent regional media workshop, 'Vartalap', held in Guwahati. Organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI), the workshop focused on the theme '12 Years of Vishwas, Vikas and Jan-Kalyan: Empowerment Through Financial Inclusion', emphasizing the role of financial inclusion in public welfare.

Data presented at the event, attributed to SBI, indicated that the funds were channeled through a diverse array of welfare programmes. Key initiatives benefiting from DBT include Orunodoi 2.0, the Nijut Moina scheme, Jibon Anuprerana scheme, pre-matric scholarships, and dairy subsidy support, among others. A year-wise breakdown reveals the scale of transfers: Rs 638 crore in 2023, a substantial jump to Rs 6,367 crore in 2024, followed by Rs 4,354 crore in 2025, and Rs 4,980 crore recorded until March 2026.

Addressing the gathering, a regional director from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) highlighted the critical importance of the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (NSFI) in achieving comprehensive empowerment. The consistent growth in DBT figures reflects Assam's commitment to leveraging digital platforms for transparent and efficient delivery of welfare benefits, directly impacting millions of lives and fostering economic inclusion across the state.
