Nagaon’s education sector is reeling from revelations of a significant fraud concerning the illicit issuance of SEBA and DISE codes to private schools, reportedly without the requisite official permissions and registration. The controversy has triggered a full-fledged inquiry, with seven educational institutions now facing investigation.

Reports indicate that a powerful nexus operating within the office of the Inspector of Schools, Nagaon Circle, has allegedly been providing these crucial codes to several private schools. This bypasses mandatory departmental procedures, including obtaining prior permission and registration from the Department of Secondary Education, in exchange for substantial sums of money. The alleged scheme is believed to have been operational since the 2024-2025 academic year.

The irregularities came to light after RC Jain, chairman of the State Education Council, took serious note of the matter and subsequently ordered a comprehensive inquiry. Following this directive, suspicions of a potential cover-up have emerged, with allegations against Inspector of Schools Mridul Kumar Nath for reportedly attempting to downplay the issue by merely seeking an explanation from Computer Assistant Mridu Plaban Das (EDP). Furthermore, accusations have been leveled against other staff members within the office, suggesting their involvement in the alleged fraudulent activities.

Sources familiar with the investigation claim that numerous educational institutions across the district may have illegally acquired DISE codes through this network. The ongoing probe aims to unearth the full extent of the scam and identify all individuals involved, ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of the state’s education system.
