Digital Desk: Several people were killed in a Russian strike on a grocery shop and cafe in the eastern region of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the strike slammed into the Kupiansk district of the war-torn region bordering Russia, where Moscow's forces have been pressing to reclaim territory lost to Ukrainian troops last year.

"The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack," Zelensky said in a statement on social media.

At least 49 people were killed, the Ukrainian prosecutor general said.

Zelensky shared a photo of a woman kneeling over the body of someone who was apparently killed in the strike, with more dead strewn around her and rescue workers working nearby.

The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleg Sinegubov, said that the strike hit a cafe and shop in the village of Groza at around 1:15 p.m. (1015 GMT).

The village is located 30 kilometers (about 20 miles) west of Kupiansk, a frontline town, and had a pre-war population of approximately 500 people.

"Rescuers are working on the scene," he said, adding that a 6-year-old boy was among the dead. One child had been injured, he added.
