The decision has been made by the state animal husbandry department after receiving a great number of complaints of dog attacks and rabies in the city.

Digital Desk: Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chauhan stated on Monday that the department has decided to make Bengaluru stray dog-free.

The decision has been made by the state animal husbandry department after receiving a great number of complaints of dog attacks and rabies in the city.

Moreover, Chauhan discussed the vaccination of Bengaluru's street dogs in a meeting with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials and the animal husbandry department.

The decision to make Bengaluru stray dog-free would be made based on all the information provided by the BBMP and the animal husbandry department, Chauhan added.

"Street dogs should be caught and given all necessary vaccinations so that people won't have to worry about them. In order to prevent scarcity and disturbance by the street dogs, we are also going to gather them under one shelter where they can be saved and properly cared for, "Chandhan stated.

As per the 2019 survey, despite the BBMP's successfully neutering at least 45,000 animals annually starting in 2018, the survey found that Bengaluru's stray dog population is only increasing. The survey reported that only 51% of the city's 3,09,000 stray dogs had been neutered.

The BBMP personnel involved in the scheme, however, said that it is more difficult than it seems to control the stray dog population. A senior BBMP official told ANI, "If they target 10 or 15 dogs, they manage to capture only one or two as the strays hide in culverts and ditches."
