claiming affiliation with the Bir Lachit Sena, accosted him and demanded a hefty sum of Rs 7 lakh

Digital Desk: An extortion racket purportedly operating under the guise of the Bir Lachit Sena has been dismantled by Noonmati Police. The alleged perpetrators, identified as Manoj Deka alias Manoj Asom, Jayanta Sharma alias Jayanta Asom, and Tapan Sharma alias Tapan Assam, are accused of orchestrating a robbery and extortion scheme targeting innocent civilians.

The scheme came to light when Bhupen Gogoi, a resident of Dispur, reported to the police that he had been coerced into parting with a significant sum of money under threats of violence. Gogoi recounted how a group of youths, claiming affiliation with the Bir Lachit Sena, accosted him and demanded a hefty sum of Rs 7 lakh. When Gogoi refused to comply, the situation escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in the theft of his vehicle and Rs 50,000 in cash.

Fearing for his safety, Gogoi lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Dispur police station, prompting a swift investigation into the matter. Subsequent inquiries led to the identification who were reportedly planning further acts of extortion and violence.

The accused individuals not only stand accused of extortion but also face charges related to attempted assault, as they allegedly threatened to take Gogoi's life and attempted to carry out their threats within his rented accommodation.
