Digital Desk: At least eight people were burned alive in the wee hours of Tuesday after their houses were set on fire by a mob in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, West Bengal. According to DGP Manoj Malaviya, the incident occurred within an hour after the alleged murder of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader. Seven charred bodies were recovered from one of the burned houses, while one injured person died in the hospital, Malaviya said. "The situation has been brought under control, and a police picket line has been set up in the village. We're looking into how the houses caught fire and whether it's related to the death of the panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village," Malaviya said. When asked about claims by some fire department officials that ten bodies were found, Malaviya clarified that while seven of them were recovered after the fire was put out, three injured people were rescued, one of whom died in a hospital. The DGP said that the SDPO and the in-charge of the Rampurhat police station had been removed from active policing duties. According to Malaviya, the state government has formed a special investigation team led by ADG (CID) Gyanwant Singh. Meanwhile, the ruling TMC has dispatched a three-member MLA team to the spot, led by minister Firhad Hakim, to evaluate the situation. On Monday, police discovered the body of Bhadu Sheikh, the TMC panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village.
