Digital Desk: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Bhajan Lal Sharma as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. The surprising decision was finalized during the BJP legislative party meeting held in Jaipur, attended by BJP observers Rajnath Singh, Vinod Tawde, and Saroj Pandey.
Sharma, a first-time MLA from the Sanganer assembly seat, previously held the position of Mahamantri in the Rajasthan BJP. Hailing from the Brahmin community, this selection is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to maintain caste equilibrium, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled for May 2024.
While the announcement has caught many off guard, sources indicate that Sharma is likely to have two deputy chief ministers, although their identities remain undisclosed at this time.
In the recently concluded assembly elections, the BJP secured a historic mandate in Rajasthan, winning 115 out of 199 seats, leading to the removal of the incumbent Ashok Gehlot government. The Congress, in contrast, managed to secure 69 seats. Notably, the election for the Karanpur seat was not held following the demise of the Congress candidate.
Before this unexpected announcement, notable contenders for the Chief Ministerial post included former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, state BJP chief CP Joshi, former MP Rajyavardhan Singh Rathod, and MLAs Mahant Balaknath, Siddhi Kumari, and Diya Kumari. Raje, in particular, was considered a front-runner, having recently met with loyal MLAs. The decision to appoint Sharma has left political pundits and party members alike in surprise, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of politics in the region.
