New Delhi: Prominent national boxing star and the reigning World Youth champion Arundhati Choudhary has challenged Olympic bronze medalist and Assam’s pride Lovlina Borgohain.

In order to prove her ability Choudhary approached the president of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) Ajay Singh and demanded to organize a selection trial match against Borgohain in the light middleweight 70 kg category event for the upcoming AIBA Women’s World Championships.

In a letter to BFI, Choudhary stated that Lovlina has won a bronze in Olympics, however, she has been out of practice since then. Therefore, if she is given a match opportunity with the Olympic champ she has a very good chance to win a medal for India in the world championships. In the letter, Choudhary also referred to an example of MC Mary Kom, where in the past she had too had given a trial.

Choudhary’s challenge for a match against Borgohain came after the BFI had announced earlier that the winner of the nationals will be selected for the 11 weight categories for world championships, but not in the 70 kg category where Borgohain has automatically been qualified for being an Olympic medalist this year.

Borgohain had also skipped the national championships this year due to this.

The 20-year-old Choudhary, who hails from Kota, Rajasthan is the current national champion in the 70 kg category where Borgohain had clinched a bronze medal for Indian in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Choudhary punched down top national boxers from Haryana, Railways and Services before being crowned as a national champion.

In addition, Choudhary is also the current World Youth boxing champion.
