VVS Laxman added that the youngsters representing India in the ODI series against South Africa should seize the opportunity to strengthen their case.
Digital Desk: VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and India's interim coach for the ODI series against South Africa, has shared his thoughts on the team-building process for the upcoming 50-over World Cup.
Laxman stated that selecting the best team for the 50-over World Cup, which will be held in India in 2023, would be difficult. The former India batter stated that the team management will have a plethora of options due to the excellent competitiveness and high level of performance of all the young people.
While the T20I squad, which includes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and other top players, is in Australia for the 2022 T20 World Cup, the ODI squad includes Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill, and Kuldeep Yadav. Pacer Mohammad Siraj, who was called up for the T20I series in place of first-team bowler Jasprit Bumrah, is also present.
Laxman stated, "We have a talented group of cricketers, and they are all looking forward to winning the series." Because the competition among them is so fierce, we are spoiled for choice. It would be difficult for selectors to select the best team for the 2023 50-over World Cup."
The India legend also advised the team's young players to make the most of their opportunities.
"They are aware that once the key players return, they will not have as many opportunities, so this is their opportunity to shine and remain competitive as the strongest team is chosen," Laxman added.
Laxman has previously served as interim coach for Team India. "As a backup coach, it has been successful thus far," he said of that aspect. It all started with the Ireland series, followed by the first T20I against England and the Zimbabwe series. Given his work commitments and the upcoming T20 World Cup, there is clearly a need to fill in for Rahul Dravid."
