Guwahati: Assam police started a drive against illegal meat trading in the markets by the brokers. On Thursday, police raided meat markets in various parts of the city.

Police have stated that butchers are illegally selling the meat of sheep to the customers in the name of providing 'patha' meat (castrated male (wether) goat) meat.

Police seized several meat outlets in Guwahati areas, including Paltanbazar, Ulubari, Ujjain Bazar.

As per police reports, the smugglers brought sheep supplies from the only goat market in Juripar, Assam. Butchers used to preserve the meat and then sell it to the customers. 

Moreover, police have also raided some of the fish markets in different city areas. Police destroyed the preserved illegal fish and meats by pouring phenyl.

Police authorities have also informed that penalties have been imposed on the traders.
