Digital Desk: The byelection for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which became vacant after Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away in October, will take place on December 5, according to a statement from the Election Commission on Saturday.

On December 5, the Election Commission also declared by-elections for five Assembly seats: Padampur in Odisha, Sardarshahar in Rajasthan, Kurhani in Bihar, Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh, and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. After former Samajwadi Party MLA Azam Khan was found guilty of making a hate speech and given a three-year prison sentence on October 28, the Rampur seat became vacant.

Phase two of voting in the Gujarat elections will take place concurrently with the byelections. The six byelections will be counted on December 8, the same day as the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
