According to the notification, the MEP will assist authorities in preventing the export of non-basmati rice as basmati rice...

Digital Desk: A day after imposing a 20% duty was levied on parboiled rice, India has restricted the export of basmati rice.

Exports of basmati rice contracted at a cost less than $1200 a ton are now temporarily halted, the ministry stated.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated in a notification on Sunday that the move was intended to curb non-basmati exports that were illegal but were being shipped under the guise of basmati.

The government notification stated that "Contracts of Basmati rice below $1200 a ton may be kept in abeyance and may be evaluated by a committee to be set up by the Chairman of APEDA." For the regulation of Basmati rice exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) are responsible.

According to the notification, the MEP will assist authorities in preventing the export of non-basmati rice as basmati rice.

Around 4 million metric tons of basmati rice are exported from India annually to nations like the United States, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Before the temporary banning of basmati rice, the government placed a 20% levy on the export of parboiled rice to preserve a sufficient local supply and control domestic prices.

Non-basmati white rice exports were prohibited by the government last month to increase domestic supplies and control retail prices over the impending festive season. Exports of broken rice had been prohibited in September last year.
