Digital Desk: The Centre has suggested granting autonomous territorial powers to six eastern districts of Nagaland, which would be governed by the Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organisation (ENPO), in order to resolve their ongoing demand for the formation of a separate state, a Hindustan Times report stated.

The government has suggested the establishment of an autonomous council known as Frontier Naga territory. It will have 49 constituencies, with 40 elected members and nine nominees, said ENPO office bearers on condition of anonymity.

A meeting of the Eastern Nagaland autonomous council has been scheduled for June 30 in Kohima, according to reports. The meeting is expected to be attended by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Ministers Y. Patton and T.R. Zeliang, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, all cabinet ministers, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs representing the state, the chief secretary, and other senior officials from the state government and others.

ENPO's six districts are Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamator, and Noklak. These districts are home to seven Naga tribes: the Konyak, Khiamniungan, Chang, Sangtam, Tikhir, Phom, and Yimkhiung.

Nagaland currently has 20 assembly seats out of a total of 60.

Last year, the ENPO's demand for a separate state gathered traction, and the group threatened to boycott elections in the state. However, ahead of the February assembly elections, the Union government suggested an autonomous council for the eastern districts.

The push for a separate state, Frontier Nagaland, has been going on since 2010.
