Digital Desk: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that the central government is planning to invest Rs 3 lakh crore to construct US-standard national highways in Assam.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari discussed the progress of various national highway projects in Assam. He added that the ring road of Guwahati, which costs Rs 5,800 crore, will be completed by December 2027.

He assured that all the proposed national highways would be equivalent to the highways of the USA. Besides this, a tunnel in Dibrugarh under the Brahmaputra river for Rs 12,000 crore is already in the process of sanctioning, the Union Minister said.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Gadkari said that the government is giving the highest priority to the development of infrastructure in the northeast region. This will create more investment, jobs, wealth and progress in Assam, he added.

Replying to a query by an Independent MP from Assam, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan on the discontinuation of toll gates that do not conform to prescribed rules, Gadkari defended the importance of toll gates. He said that toll gates are necessary to raise funds for such road development projects.
