This will be a lunar penumbral eclipse, meaning that the moon will not be exactly opposite the Earth and Sun, signifying an 'umbral' eclipse, in which the Sun completely blocks the Sun's brightness. As per EarthSky, the full Moon will be south of the planet's umbra, or dark shadow, on May 5. As a result, rather than being fully obscure, the Moon's radiance will be diminished.
