According to Xinhua, the facility will have 6,000 beds and will be ready in six days. Reportedly, on Monday, the northeastern province of Jilin recorded over 1,000 new cases for the second day in a row. China's National Health Commission reported 3,393 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, more than double the previous day, as the country faced its worst viral outbreak in two years. As a result of the statewide outbreak, Shanghai schools have been closed, and numerous northeastern cities have been shut down, as nearly 19 provinces combat local outbreaks of the Omicron and Delta strains. According to state media, the city of Jilin has been partially shut down, with hundreds of neighborhoods sealed off, and the mayor of Jilin and the director of the Changchun health commission have been fired. According to official reports, the smaller cities of Siping and Dunhua, both in Jilin provinces, were closed down on Thursday and Friday. When the virus was first detected in China, the government implemented a tight 'zero-Covid' policy that included quick lockdowns, travel restrictions, and mass testing. However, the most recent flare-up, which is being fueled by the highly transmissible Omicron form and an increase in asymptomatic cases, is challenging that strategy.
