Digital Desk: A Tube rail station in London will have Bangla signage from now onwards. Reportedly, the English sign has been joined with Bangla signs to recognize the rich cultural legacy of the significant population of Bangla-speaking people living in Whitechapel.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a tweet to celebrate the victory of Bengali culture and heritage in the foreign country. “Proud to note that the London Tube Rail has accepted Bengali as a language of signage at Whitechapel Station, signifying the increasing global importance & strength of the 1000-year-old language Bengali,” the chief minister tweeted.

John Biggs, the mayor of Tower Hamlets, organized and paid the signboards. Biggs uploaded photos of the new Bangla signboards on Twitter and praised London Mayor Sadiq Khan for his support in the campaign.
“Delighted to see bilingual signs now installed at Whitechapel station - in both English and Bangla - funded by @TowerHamletsNow. Thanks to everyone who has worked on this campaign with us and to @SadiqKhan for helping us to make it happen,” he wrote.

Whitechapel station is located behind the Whitechapel Market and opposite the Royal London Hospital. It lies between the District and Hammersmith and City lines’ Aldgate East and Stepney Green stations, as well as the East London Line’s Shoreditch High Street and Shadwell stations.
