Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Aizawl on Monday on a two-day visit to the poll-bound state of Mizoram, to campaign for the party.

According to Lalremruata Renthlei, the head of the Mizoram Congress media cell, the Congress MP landed by helicopter from the capital of Tripura, Agartala, to Aizawl, as reported by PTI. The leader has started his padayatra from Chanmari to Raj Bhawan in Aizawl in preparation for the assembly elections on November 7. He will speak at a rally near the governor's residence.

Gandhi will also speak to students in the evening, according to Renthlei, who was quoted by PTI. The former head of the Congress will meet with party leaders on Tuesday and give a press conference in Aizawl. Additionally, he will also visit Lunglei town and speak at a public gathering there.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to travel from Lunglei to Agartala via Delhi on Tuesday, stated Renthlei.

Election day for Mizoram's 40-seat assembly is November 7, and the counting of votes will take place on December 3, along with the four other states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

Both the main opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) have already announced the names of their candidates for each of the 40 seats. During Gandhi's visit, Congress is scheduled to release the names of the candidates. According to the BJP, the list of its candidates for the elections will be released in the following two to three days.

Political parties, churches, civil society organizations, and student organizations have reportedly petitioned the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reschedule the counting date because Sunday is a holy day for the state's Christian population. Notably, according to the 2011 census cited by the news agency, Christians make up almost 87% of the population of Mizoram.
