Workers and activists from the Congress party
participated in a nationwide "satyagraha" at more than 3,500 assembly
headquarters to protest the government's "Agnipath Yojana" for the
armed forces. They also delivered a memo to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
requesting that he revoke the defence recruitment programme.
According to Prakash, such
"gimmicks" are being tested at a time when China is posing a
territorial threat to India.
The Congress further requested that the
"many innocent teenagers" who are now detained for opposing the
project be freed; otherwise, the party threatened to continue its protest in
Parliament.
No spokespersons for the Bharatiya Janata Party were available for comment.
The Indian Air Force announced today that it got almost 57,000 applications for enrolment in Agnipath despite the opposition's strident complaints against the programme.
