Digital Desk: Assam's chapter of the Congress party today announced the Assam edition of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which will follow the main nationwide march that party leader Rahul Gandhi has organised, in an effort to turn around its political fortunes in the state and lay the groundwork for the 2024 state elections.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) planned this march, which would cover 834 kilometres as part of the party's mass contact campaign, from Dhubri in lower Assam to Sadiya in upper Assam.

The Assam march, led by APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah, will begin on Tuesday and aim to travel 834 kilometres across the state in 70 days. The Yatra will begin in Golakganj in the Dhubri district, which is on the border between Assam and West Bengal, and end in the Sadiya district, which is at the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Several central leaders will attend the Assam-specific Yatra in addition to all of the major state leaders of the Congress. Rahul Gandhi won't be there, though, according to party insiders.

Congress hopes that this Yatra would provide the party in the state the much-needed impetus ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and Panchayat elections, which will be held next year. Congress is troubled by a string of party stalwarts defecting to the BJP.
