Guwahati: The CWRC (Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation), a federally run wildlife care department of Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Assam Forest Department (AFD), celebrates its 20th year of wildlife conservation service in Assam.
The center is supported by the International partner - International Fund for Animal Welfare(IFAW). It started at Panbari Reserve Forest of Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (KTR) on August 28, 2002.
While congratulating the CWRC team on the foundation day, P. Sivakumar, Director, Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (KTR), Ramesh Gogoi, DFO, and Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (EAWLD), along with additional senior forest officials, recommended their important inputs for strengthening the wildlife conservation assistance in Assam.
CWRC and its satellite departments have attended 7532 wildlife cases about 258 mammals, birds, and reptiles in Assam until July 2021.
Out of these, 22% are mammals, 36% birds, and 42% reptiles. Overall, 63.73% of the animals served by the team in Assam have been released back to the wild.
It is to be noted that CWRC has attended 101 rhino cases in Assam so far. Twenty hand-raised rhinos were translocated from Kaziranga National Park to Manas National Park by the CWRC team jointly with Assam Forest Department.
The restored rhinos gave birth to eleven newborn rhino calves in Manas National Park. In addition, CWRC had released two rehabilitated rhinos in Kaziranga National Park.
