Digital Desk: The low-pressure region over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the neighbouring South Andaman Sea became a well-marked low-pressure area today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a bulletin.

"At 0530 IST today, May 9, 2023, the low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent South Andaman Sea has transformed into a well-marked low-pressure area over the same region. It is very likely to intensify into a depression by this evening over the same region," an official statement said.

"On May 10th, it could turn into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent regions of the East Central Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. It is expected to proceed N-northwestwards at first till the morning of May 12. Thereafter, it may gradually recurve and move north-northeastwards towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts," the statement said.

Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that people need not be concerned about the storm because the state administration is prepared to handle the situation.

"There is no reason to be afraid of the cyclone. We would rescue people from coastal areas if different situations arise as the cyclone moves to Bangladesh and eventually Myanmar," CM Banerjee stated.
