  • The multi-crore Mission Chariali flyover project in Tezpur, initiated in 2020, is significantly behind schedule, causing widespread distress among commuters and local businesses, casting a shadow on the state's infrastructure development claims

TEZPUR: Despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's frequent assertions of rapid development across Assam, particularly in surface communication, the protracted construction of the Mission Chariali flyover in Tezpur presents a contrasting reality. The significant delays are leaving daily commuters and local businesses grappling with considerable inconvenience and safety hazards.

This ambitious infrastructure project, spanning approximately 3.2 kilometers from Balipukhuri Tiniali-Kumargaon to Porua-Don Bosco High School, was launched on March 1, 2020, with an estimated budget of Rs 275.9 crore. The initial completion target was set for 2026. However, current progress indicates a substantial portion of the work remains unfinished, making it increasingly improbable that the flyover will be ready within the stipulated deadline.

Local residents and business owners have voiced profound frustration over the slow pace of work. The prolonged construction has led to unpaved diversion routes and a noticeable lack of essential safety measures. Pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, and other vehicle operators frequently contend with inadequate barricades, insufficient warning signs, and a lack of dust suppression, creating hazardous conditions on a daily basis. The alternative routes, essential for managing traffic during construction, are themselves becoming a source of major congestion and annoyance.

The ongoing situation at Mission Chariali underscores the challenges in executing large-scale infrastructure projects, especially when public convenience and safety are compromised. Local stakeholders are urging authorities to expedite the construction while ensuring better management of traffic and enhanced safety protocols for the duration of the project.
