Digital Desk: On Saturday and Sunday, several parts of northwest India experienced torrential rain, with Delhi shattering a 40-year-old record. The India Meteorological Department said that Delhi received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, the most in a single July day since 1982.
According to the news agency PTI, at least 15 people were killed in landslides in hill states as heavy rains and strong winds slammed numerous portions of north India.
Over the previous two days, Northwest India has been inundated by rain, with many places in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab receiving "heavy to very heavy" rainfall.
The latest data from the India Meteorological Department, abundant rains in various parts of India over the first eight days of July have bridged the country's rainfall deficit. The total rainfall for the monsoon season has reached 243.2 mm, which is 2% more than the typical of 239.1 mm, according to the data.
On July 10, 2003, the city had 133.4 mm of rain, with an all-time high of 266.2 mm on July 21, 1958.
The Met Office has issued a yellow signal, warning of moderate rain that could cause additional challenges for Delhi residents.
The severe rain in Delhi had flooded parks, passageways, marketplaces, and even hospital grounds, causing traffic mayhem.
Images and videos of commuters wading through knee-deep water swamped social media platforms, raising questions about the city's drainage infrastructure's efficiency.
Furthermore, the water level in Delhi's Yamuna River is increasing and is projected to break the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Tuesday, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
Gurugram also experienced flooding and traffic congestion in numerous locations. The weather service had already issued a yellow warning for the city, predicting moderate to severe rain.
