Digital Desk: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who is thought to be close with the Gandhi family, is most likely to submit a nomination for the position of party president, reports said on Wednesday.
The Congress president election is scheduled to be held on October 17. Singh is expected to arrive in the national capital tonight.
The Congress had planned to nominate Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot for the party's top position, but the political turmoil in Rajasthan has upset the Gandhis.
So far, Congress treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal and Shashi Tharoor have accepted nomination forms from the CEA. However, Bansal claimed that he is merely a proposer and not the candidate.
Reportedly, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot will meet the Congress high command in the national capital today.
"The Chief Minister is going to Delhi at 5.30 pm today to express the feelings of 102 MLAs, as their guardian, with the party leadership and organization," Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said after a meeting with the CM.
"The Congress high command will decide whether Gehlot will submit a nomination for party president or not," Kachariyawas added.
As per reports, Gehlot's nomination for the top party position has not yet been completely dismissed.
For the nominations for the top position in the Congress, names like Mallikarjun Kharge, AK Antony, Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh, Ambika Soni, and Pawan Kumar Bansal have emerged.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath said that he was not keen on becoming Congress president as he wanted to focus on MP Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in 2023.
