  • The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has initiated a controlled release of water from the Doyang Dam, a measure taken to manage escalating reservoir levels and protect communities from potential flash floods

In a proactive move to ensure public safety, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has commenced opening the gates of the Doyang Dam. This decision comes as water levels in the reservoir have been steadily rising, prompting authorities to release excess water in a controlled manner to avert the threat of flash floods in downstream areas, particularly impacting communities in parts of Assam.

Officials from NEEPCO confirmed that the calibrated water release is a preventative measure, necessitated by significant rainfall in the dam's catchment areas over recent days. The continuous inflow of water had pushed the reservoir towards its maximum capacity, necessitating immediate action to prevent an uncontrolled overflow that could endanger lives and property in low-lying regions.

The Doyang Hydro Electric Project, managed by NEEPCO, plays a crucial role in the region's power generation and water management. Its operation requires careful balancing, especially during periods of heavy monsoon activity. By initiating a phased opening of the dam gates, NEEPCO aims to gradually lower the reservoir's elevation, thereby reducing the hydrostatic pressure and allowing for safe passage of surplus water.

Local administrations and emergency services in areas downstream have reportedly been ed to the controlled water release. Residents in these vulnerable zones are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, particularly those living close to riverbanks. This strategic decision underscores the ongoing commitment to regional flood preparedness and the careful management of vital water infrastructure to safeguard the well-being of the populace.
