Bandyopadhyay, also known as 'Ek Takar Daktar,' or (one rupee doctor) treated patients for nearly 60 years for a single rupee.


Digital Desk: Dr. Sushovan Bandyopadhyay, a doctor and politician treated patients for one rupee for nearly 60 years and is affectionately known as 'Ek Takar Daktar' (one rupee doctor). He is a former MLA from Bolpur who ran on a Congress ticket in 1984.


He had previously been a member of Trinamool Congress and its district president but had since left the party. In 2020, he was awarded the Padma Shri. 


The same year, his name was entered into the Guinness World Records for treating the most patients. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee both expressed their condolences on Bandyopadhyay's death.


Modi posted a tweet that reads, "Dr. Sushovan Bandyopadhyay epitomized the best of the human spirit. He will be remembered as a kind and large-hearted person who cured many people. "I recall my interaction with him at the Padma Awards ceremony. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."


West Bengal CM also expressed her deep grief and tweeted a post saying, "Sad to know of the demise of benevolent doctor Sushovan Bandyopadhyay. She said, "The famed one-rupee-doctor of Birbhum was known for his public-spirited philanthropy, and I express my sincerest condolences."
