An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck the northern region of Kargil in Ladakh...

Digital Desk: An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck the northern region of Kargil in Ladakh, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The seismic activity occurred at approximately 3:48 p.m. local time, with its epicenter pinpointed in Kargil at coordinates 76.74°E and 33.15°N, at a depth of 10 km.

Fortunately, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have surfaced, offering a sense of relief to the affected region. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as further details emerge.

This seismic event follows closely after two mild-intensity earthquakes rattled the Union Territory of Ladakh earlier this month. The NCS recorded the first tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale at 8:25 am, located 10 km below the surface with coordinates 35.44°N and 77.36°E. The subsequent earthquake, registering 3.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 4:29 p.m. at a depth of 5 km, positioned at 35.23°N and 77.59°E.

The National Center for Seismology, serving as the authoritative body under the Government of India for earthquake monitoring, continues to investigate and gather additional information regarding these recent seismic activities.
