Digital Desk: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the schedule for the Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura assembly elections on Monday (January 18). At 2:30 pm, the ECI will hold a press conference.

The term of the three assemblies is ending on different dates in March.

The ECI stated on Saturday that it would "deliver elections" in Nagaland, as mandated by the Constitution.

The Naga civil societies have been demanding a solution to the vexed Naga political issue before the state election, while the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organization has announced that they will not participate in the election process unless their demand for a separate state comprised of the six eastern districts is fulfilled.

The present Nagaland Assembly's term ends on March 12, said Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

When asked about the state election dates, Kumar said that the commission was gathering input from the three Northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland - and that they would go back and hold another meeting before announcing the dates.

In response to political parties' desire to ditch Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in favour of ballot papers,  he said there is no way to go back even technologically.
