Sangma, who had been battling health issues for some time, was diagnosed with dementia in 2022.
A towering figure in the state's sporting history, Sangma was born on April 12, 1955, in Dibrugarh.
He earned immense acclaim throughout his career as a formidable forward, eventually representing India on the international platforms.
His exceptional skill and dedication to the sport made him a household name and a revered figure in Indian football.
Even while serving in the police force, Sangma remained deeply committed to the game, mentoring and inspiring generations of athletes.
His former teammates and colleagues have described his passing as an irreparable loss to the sporting community, noting the profound impact he had both on and off the field.
His mortal remains will be kept at his residence today for public respects.
The final farewell is scheduled for April 5 at the family's private land in the Adingiri Hills, where he will be laid to rest.
The date was chosen in coordination with the local community to ensure that family members travelling from distant locations can arrive to pay their respects.
His enduring legacy remains a cornerstone of Assam's athletic heritage and a profound inspiration for future generations.
