Digital Desk: Imran Khan was ousted as Pakistan's prime minister in March 2022, but controversy still surrounded the cricketer-turned-politician. In the most recent case, PML-N leader Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha filed an "attempt to murder' charge against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief.
The case has been registered at the Secretariat police station in Islamabad. The development came to the fore a day after Ranjha was reportedly attacked outside the Election Commission of Pakistan office in the federal capital. The protests outside the ECP office were carried out by PTI workers against the poll body's verdict. The order disqualified the PTI chairman in the Toshakhana case. The ECP also ruled that Khan was no longer a member of the National Assembly.
Imran Khan was charged in the Toshakhana case with failing to present the earnings of the sale of presents purchased at a discount from the state wealth, also known as Toshakhana.
Following the verdict, PTI workers took to the streets to protest the move.
Khan is also accused of aiding and abetting a crime in the FIR which charges him with murder. A report suggests that he has been named along with five other charges in the FIR. Ranjha claims that he was beaten as soon as he went out of the ECP office, with the intent of murder and at the 'behest of the PTI leadership.' He stated that his car had been trashed and that Khan's supporters had attempted to smash the window.
According to Ranjha, Khan ordered the closure of the Sri Nagar Highway, and PTI party members threw stones and vandalized police officers on the scene.
It should be noted that Ranjha appeared as a plaintiff in the Toshakhana case before the ECP.
Imran Khan, who stormed to power in 2018, received expensive gifts from rich Arab rulers during official visits, which were deposited in the Toshakhana. Later, he bought it at a reduced price in accordance with the applicable rules and resold it for a hefty profit.
According to Khan's statement to the ECP, the presents he received from the state treasury after paying Rs 21.56 million were apparently worth Rs 58 million. The gifts included a Graff wristwatch, a pair of cufflinks, an expensive pen, a ring, and four Rolex watches.
