Digital Desk: A historic and culturally significant festival gears up to take place from the 16th-18th of January 2025 in Assam’s Morigaon district portraying visitors and participants from across the region. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and unique tradition, the event celebrates harmony and unity among diverse communities. Alongside cultural performances and traditional practices, the festival offers a rare opportunity to experience
Assam’s rich heritage and living traditions, making it a must-visit for those seeking an authentic cultural experience.

One of Assam’s most unique and historic festivals, Jonbeel Mela will be held from January 16 to January 18, 2025, near Jagiroad in Morigaon District. This traditional fair which has been organized for three days by the Tiwa community since the 15th century is renowned for preserving
the ancient barter system and fostering cultural harmony among the indigenous tribes of North East India.

This festival begins with Agni Puja (fire worship), performed to seek universal well-being. This festival is followed by significant and joyous traditional rituals like community fishing in the semi-circle-shaped Jonbeel Lake. The main attraction of this Mela is the Barter System, where tribes from the various hills including the Khashi, Jayantia, and Karbi, exchange goods like ginger, turmeric, fruits, and other various vegetables with the people of plains for rice, fish, and sweets.

Adding to this Mela, several cultural events such as traditional dances, music performances, and indigenous games like egg fighting and cock fighting bring vibrancy to this historic Mela. A key high point of this Mela is the ‘Raj Darbar’ (Royal Court), where the Gova Tiwa Deoraja (King) and his courtiers interact with people and collect symbolic taxes, reflecting the fair’s historical and cultural significance.

The Government of Assam recognizes the cultural importance of this event by providing annual allocation to the region’s traditional king, securing the preservation of this unique heritage.

Jonbeel Mela offers visitors a chance to observe a living barter system and immerse themselves in Assam’s rich cultural areas. This beel is located about 5 kilometers from Jagiroad and 65 kilometers from Guwahati, the fair is accessible and promises a rare cultural experience.

This is going to be an extraordinary opportunity to explore a blend of history, culture, and tradition at Jonbeel Mela 2025. Don’t Miss It!
