Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's photo and name were used in fake social media posts-old...

Digital Desk: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's photo and name were used in fake social media posts-old, the Supreme Court said today, citing what is called an ''ill-intended'' post on platforms such as WhatsApp asking people to protest against the government.

The posts-old have been reported to the police by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court stated in a press statement that no such post had been put up by the Chief Justice, nor had he authorized any such post.

The Supreme Court Secretary-General, Atul Kuharkaker, stated that a complaint had been lodged with the Delhi Police Cyber Cell.

"It has come to the notice of the Supreme Court of India that a social media post (urging the public to protest against authorities) using a file photograph and falsely quoting the Chief Justice of India is being circulated," said the Supreme Court in its statement.

"The post is fake, ill-intended, and mischievous," it said, adding that action would be taken in association with law enforcement authorities.

The Supreme Court stated that it had ordered severe judicial action against the individuals responsible for the fake posts-old.

The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, condemned what he called "fraudulent and misleading" WhatsApp forwards in the name of the Chief Justice.

No Chief Justice could be involved in such posts-old, and Justice Chandrachud would never be associated with such activities, said the government lawyer.

The misuse of the Chief Justice of India's name for such serious misconduct should and will be punished, said Mehta.
