Digital Desk: A massive fire broke out around 10 a.m. today, 16 November, at the Post Office building in Bharalumukh, Guwahati, triggering panic among residents. The blaze originated on the third floor of the building, and preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit may have caused the incident.

There were three fire tenders, which were immediately on the scene, and this number was subsequently raised to five as firefighters tried to subdue the flames. The situation escalated, when two LPG cylinders exploded. Fortunately, the fire did not reach the post office located on the ground floor but ravaged the residential sections on the upper floors.

Rescue team managed to save one person  who was trapped inside. Though an official statement is awaited, the victim was found in a near-lifeless condition and rushed to GMCH for urgent medical care. By noon, two more people, a married couple, were also rescued from the building. The victims have been identified as 47-year-old Deb Chowdhury and 36-year-old Pompi Choudhury.

Firefighters continue to monitor the building for any remaining hotspots. Further details are awaited as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
